Look East's Susie Fowler-Watt, who presented a special "welcome home" programme from Pirbright barracks on Surrey, said it was a very moving return for the battalion, known as the Vikings.

The tears, hugs and relief of the homecoming for the families of the soldiers whose six-month tour thousands of miles away in Afghanistan's Helmand province.

The troops, many of them recruited from Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire, endured some of the fiercest fighting seen in recent British military history so the return spelled the end of months of worry for most families.

But their thoughts were also with the relatives of the nine Vikings who died doing their duty so far from home - and the Royal Anglians are determined their sacrifice will be remembered.
