A male Goldfinch in full summer song, Dale, Pembrokeshire, 30th June 2008.

He was about 20 feet from the camera, completely ignoring me, in a two-bird song competition with another male in a copse of trees. You can just hear the runner-up occasionally, with the Herring gulls in the background. "Gulls, nil points!"

TECH NOTE: this was done handheld at full zoom on a Canon XL1s. I had the image stabilizer on, but even that was struggling, as it was a gusty but sunny day.
I used TubeWiz's anti-shake feature to clean it up a bit, (http://www.tubewiz.com) and stripped off the wind rumble in Sound Forge (I'm an audio person really!). It's 32kHz, 12-bit audio, but still quite OK, IMHO.

  • Its clearly a european goldfinch. Notice the red face mask and the yellow bar on the wings. You might be thinking of an American Goldfinch.
