Michael Hill Smith MW practically bleeds wine. He was born into the wine behemoth Yalumba, which in itself explains how he was introduced to wine. But Smith wasn't satisfied having the reigns of a dynasty passed onto he and his generation of family. He instead chose to blaze his own trail, arranging a buyout from the company more than 20 years ago. It was with that money that Smith picked up and moved to England on a quest to become the world's first non-British Master of Wine.
Today he owns and operates Shaw + Smith Wines with his cousin Martin Shaw in South Australia's Adelaide Hills region. We sat down to talk to him about the wines he produces and the company's history.
