Shannon sang her beautiful new song about American farmers and Native Americans for the first time at the Big Green Gathering - 30 July 2000:

There's a crowd standing at my feet.
Some are old, more are afraid.
As I look around, I see pride and dispair.
They've never been driven this far before.
They're shouting so loud maybe God will hear.

The backbone is breaking,
And as the noise dies down
A woman rises from a sea of voices,
And she reads a letter
Her husband wrote before he took his own life.
To face the failure that they were touching,

"Tell the children I'll miss them.
And it's all about the world we want
And who we want it for.
Is it for the people, or have we lost sight of it all?"

"There's no future in the future
That doesn't have a dime.
And progress isn't progress
Unless it can stand the test of time."

There's a man kneeling in the street.
He stumbles as he gets to his feet.
"I need some change, can you help me?"
I said: "I'm doing the best that I can."
And my smile was as wasted as his.
He said: "You who, who will never win,
I've seen too many broken promises,
Too many broken hours.
And I saw behind his drunken eyes
He wanted victory more than the dollar I gave him
For the ride back to his reservation.

And it's all about the world we want
And who we want it for.
Is it for the people or have we lost sight of it all? (x2)

There's no future in the future
That doesn't have a dime.
And progress isn't progress
Unless it can stand the test of time.

And it's all about the world we want
And who we want it for.
Is it for the people or have we lost sight of it all? (x3) Shannon Smy

Videographer's Note: These clips from July 2000 were digitized from a VHS copy of my original analogue Hi8 tape. This explains the timecodes in the lower right hand corner.
Converted from analogue to digital with a Sony GV-D200E.
