Photochromic lenses use UV light in order to darken. They are also somewhat temperature dependent. The colder the temperature, the darker they get. The more UV, the darker they get.
There is currently a product out called Transitions XtraActive that gets darker than a normal Transitions lens. The lens has a slight tint when 'clear' but that is not noticeable. Several people in our office LOVE them.
