Ten Down- 91 to go.
This video is a sneak preview of some of the fire-making methods I have been working on for the past few months. There are three new videos in various stages of production, all of which will hopefully be posted within the next month.
Also the "lost tapes" of the hand-crank drill, which cover the basic principles of all friction-based fires.
Welcome and thanks to all the new subscribers. Apologies and thanks to all the existing subscribers who did not unsubscribe despite the dearth of new videos. The World Cup here in South Africa was a bit of a distraction, I must admit. Rest assured that I have been busily burning things throughout. Lots of experimentation with different alternatives to char cloth, i.e. things that will take a spark or other point source of energy and then hold it and smoulder predictably (what I call a "smould" - something which is supposed to smoulder). Also lots of trial and error on designing the perfect tinder bundle or bird's nest.
Don't want to give too much away, because I'd really like people to try to guess what the different methods might be, based on the short snippets in this video. Let's just say that I've been doing some Tom Hanks style dancing and celebrating after a number of significant successes. Some of the primitive methods are hard work, but when they finally come together, it's a real oonga boonga moment.
Uploading this one in high quality for the first time (only 93 minutes of upload time to go). Not sure how much close-up detail of my features the average viewer will be able to tolerate. The soft focus of low quality has been kind to me.....
South African internet sucks. Was hoping that we'd get a huge jump in speed once the new undersea cables came into operation but it hasn't really happened. Broadband is a term applied very loosely here.
Sweet. Comments welcome. I've been getting a few lately along the lines of "skip all the talking and just show us how to do the trick". So the plan would be to post a shorter verion of each video, along the lines of a howcast or kipkay video, with written instructions in between footage of the basic steps involved. I'll still be posting the full-length videos for those who actually appreciate my odd sense of humour and some of the scientific info - then I'll get my secretary to edit it and post a shortened version after a week or two.
That's the plan. Let me know what you think.
These videos are made primarily for my OWN education and amusement. So the silly characters (Roberta, Bob) are probably going to stay. I don't really want to take myself too seriously in these videos - the last thing I'd want to do is lecture people. This series is a personal quest for knowledge. You're welcome to come along for the ride. I will be introducing some new characters too, including a Russian expert in survivink and a lost French tourist. Also a certain Professor Witherby, who will help me explain some of the more complex Iand potentially boring) scientific concepts behind the on-screen action. Because ROBwithaB is the cool action hero. We can't have him being typecast as a science nerd, right?
So much for the high quality. Upload failed after about two hours, at about 97%. Don't think I'll be trying THAT again in a hurry.
Spontaneous combustion burning smoke fire burn different ways methods funny video interesting techniques friction fire ice lens how many light a fire crazy man with too much facial hair and an afro caveman feathers in hat castaway geico survivor survivorman primitive quiz trick illusion amazing bar tricks at home brusspup kipkay 5minstudios and mythbusters maybe anyway I'm going to be doing the fire from ice thing qithin the nexto series of 10 videos stay tuned
Hey ROBwithaB, thought you might get a kick out of this: A hotel in Las Vegas (shaped like a giant parabolic mirror) is partially cooking it's guests on sunny days. Perhaps you could do a movie on how to create fire with a 40 story hotel and a sun-baking lawyer :-D

Keep up the great work! :-)

Yeah, this story showed up yesterday on yahoo news. And you're right, I got a great kick out of it. What kind of halfwit architect/engineer designs a parabolic sail comprising thousands of square metres and covers it with mirrored glass?
If the reports are true about hair singeing and plastic melting then I'm pretty sure it would get hot enough to char stuff, and probably get something smouldering.
Don't drink your wine out of bowl-shaped glasses at THIS hotel...

Most people ignore lens fires, when they're basically the lowest energy sustainable fires to make

@beakfast
And easy, too, especially if the lens is spherical.
I'm convinced that the whole mysticism surrounding crystal balls has to do with their original purpose, which was to make fire.
Very reliable, very durable and basically idiot-proof.
Will be making a video on the Viking burning-stone. They used quartz crystals, polished into bals. Doesn't have to be very big at all.
