Monday 19 May 2008. Mike Figgis in conversation with Jason Solomons. Journalist and presenter Solomons interviews twice Oscar-nominated director, writer, composer and photographer Mike Figgis.

As a pioneer of experimental and digital filmmaking, Figgis is a firm believer that there is no reason to prevent anybody from making a film. His latest film, Love Live Long, screened at Cannes, was shot in a mere 6 days for a fraction of a usual feature film budget. The film embodies all the principles of low-budget film-making discussed by Figgis in his book - Digital Filmmaking. Figgis discussed the freedom to film that today's technology offers and the virtues of filming without the army of a crew associated with a big Hollywood production, as well as his own cinematic career.

I have Figgis' "Digital Filmmaking" book at home, and I was thrilled to be there for this conversation.

My own filmmaking experience was closely inspired by Figgis on one occasion: I studied his film Leaving Las Vegas in great detail, and later asked my composer to create music similar to the beautiful score he did in that film.

This talk blew me away - he's a brilliant man.

  • mike figgis is great ! he's tells it like it is.

  • I wish this whole converstion was "what is the future of film and what is the future of humanity" comnbined - the rest of what this guy is talking about is completely uninteresting. Is technology all that people can fuss with?

How about the future of life on earth and what roles these "displays" play in it's evolution? Tarkovsky was on the right track and he talked about it.
