For those seeking a quick garden, I like the idea of planting them close, however, I realize most people will plant and leave so planting them once with the right position allows you to stagger the hostas and create a tiered effect with the smaller hostas toward the front. Hostas are like peonies - they are heritage plants - wonderful to plant and leave even for decades.
