Aldo's Adventure

Aldo's Adventure is a 1987 platformer by Dave Ibach and his son Ben. Aldo's Adventure is a direct copy of Donkey Kong, substituting Mario for the mullet-sporting Aldo. Aldo must reach the end of each branching, non-linear level and retrieve a treasure chest, dodging falling barrels and collecting valuables along the way. The game was graphically advanced for its time, giving players the option to lower the difficulty to prevent slowdown.

As mentioned on the title screen, many of these levels come from the 1982 game Ladder by Yahoo Software.

This video shows the first few levels of version 1.1, which removes some stages like "Long Island" and adds others like Blazing Inferno. There may be other stages after this, but I really couldn't get much further. Aldo's Adventure is unbelievably glitchy and hard. Notice how I'll occasionally fall through the floor or be unable to climb up ladders because of a stream of barrels.
