The over-exploitation of groundwater in the North China Plain has led to the decline of the water table as well as environmental-geological disasters such as land subsidence, ground crack, sea water intrusion, water quality deterioration, land desertification, etc. All these have become major limiting factors in the sustainable development of the region.
The Chinese Ministry of Water Resources is carrying out the formulation of the National Water Resources Comprehensive Planning. The overall goal of the NCPGMP project is to foster capacity building for groundwater management in the North China Plain through the development of a Groundwater Management Plan that will identify solutions to decrease and control groundwater exploitation in the region.
The project develops advanced technologies for groundwater planning and management that are applied in selected pilot areas. These technologies include integrated modelling, GIS and database, advanced monitoring network and design of artificial recharge of the groundwater in selected pilot area, and detailed study for the implementation of modern irrigation systems aimed at significantly reducing the water consumption for the agriculture sector.
