it pisses me off that we have to have our cell number to have an account.. it's a bullshit invasion of privacy and it freaks me the fuck out... never before I had to worry about my cell phone being tracked for something I said on youtube. Fuck that shit.

Same goes of course for every other site that uses accounts, e.g. facebook, craigslist...it made it considerably harder to just pump out accounts and manipulate the system, just to get leads to a shitty advert for some shady product. There were many blackhat wannabe-"marketers" around that did this, was kind of a noob-method, but made the "pros" ten thousands of $ per month. This ended, but sites always have to fight against spammers ( and usually the spammers are 1 step ahead)...

It's actually to make it harder to generate fake accounts. It was a common practice to upload worthless videos whose only purpose was to lead to a mfa site (made for advertising), to sell some shitty product or e-book etc. and to create dozens of dummy-accs to give the video a high number of views and upvotes. This could all be automated with the right tools. That's why websites introduced the phone-verification, it's an anti-spam tactic. Trust me, I work in online-marketing...

you dont have to add your cell phone number, it's an option that can be bypassed, they just make it look like a neccessity. Just skip the cell phone option and carry on, you'll finish your account set up just the same.
