Do something that has never been done before This is a phrase that dancehall artiste Sleepy Hallowtips lives by and incorporates into his music every time he steps into the studio and dons a pair of headphones. With his hit song From A Place igniting the airwaves, one could say that his mantra should be scripted into the hall of fame for Jamaican entertainers. Born Joel Phipps, Sleepy Hallowtips spent most of his younger years moving back and forth between Jamaica and New York but always considered Jamaica his place. With roots in the communities of Kencot and Jungle, Sleepy Hallowtips credits his surroundings for encouragement and inspiration for his music. The name Sleepy was given to him by friends while growing up because of his appearance and demeanor. Sleepy added the Hallowtips later in his career to represent danger and intensity Music is the climax of Sleepys artistic talent and he always saw himself as an entertainer. Although he did not receive support initially from his family, that did not prevent this versatile young man, from pursuing his dreams. Sleepy would say that he had a rough musical journey from getting his songs out, to being recorded by producers. He got his break at Big Yard studios in Kingston, Jamaica. His debut song Stuck In My Ways was released on the Vintage Album for the Big Yard label and released overseas. He used that as motivation to continue his music however, when the riddim was released locally, his track was not added to the playlist. This did not deter him, instead Sleepy used his initiative and street smarts, printed copies of his single and distributed them to radio stations, mixed tape dealers, and other underground music outlets. Sleepy was so focused on his goal to make his name known that he used to perform in barbershops and hair salons just to be heard and get his music across in every possible way. The single Stuck In My Ways became an underground hit. In 2006, Sleepy Hallowtips linked up with Roshaun Bay-C Clarke from the group T.O.K. Sleepy did a simple freestyle over a riddim Bay C was playing and the music chemistry (or musical vibrations) between the two was instant. Although the link to Bay-Cs Bombrush label wasnt an immediate thing, Sleepy continued to voice for Bay C. In 2008 the deal was sealed and Sleepy Hallowtips officially became the flagship artiste for the Bombrush label. In March 2008, the hit single From A Place was released to the Jamaican airwaves and the video to the single enjoys rotation on local television and cable stations. Sleepy Hallowtips is an artiste with a mission. He is determined to make dancehall music, the leading genre of music in the world, he also plans to imprint the Bombrush label in the mainstream market and he wants to be a representation of success and push the limits of music. For Sleepy, music reflects the struggle of ghetto people and the reality of life.
