Sen. Grassley held a town meeting in Waukon Iowa on June 30, 2009. A constituent shared his family's personal struggle with the burden of high health care costs and asked the Senator why he couldn't get quality, affordable health insurance like Senators get. Senator Grassley advised his constituent to "go work for the federal government" if he wanted quality insurance.

Transcript:

Constituent 1: I pay about $3,700 a year for a $1,000 deductible and $5,000 maximum deposit [?]. My question is—if Im right on this—why is your insurance so much cheaper than my insurance and better than my insurance? I think that I should have the same insurance that you have—health insurance.

Moderator: Senator Grassley?

Con. 1: Am I right on that? About how much you pay?

Sen. Grassley: I can tell you what percentage I pay. I dont--I pay 32%--

Con. 1: Thirty-two percent?

Sen. Grassley: Of the costs, yes.

Con. 1: Of the costs?

Sen. Grassley: And if you want a better insurance policy, go work for John Deere because they dont pay anything.

Con. 1: Im asking you. I dont care about John Deere! I dont work for John Deere!

Sen. Grassley: And Im answering your question! I just answered it! So why would you yell at me Why didnt I answer your question? I said I pay 32%.

Con. 1: OK.

Sen. Grassley: Whos next?

Con. 1: How much deductible?

Sen. Grassley: I dont know that but I can get you that information but I dont carry—

Constituent 2: Senator I think youre on the same plan I am and I think its-- we have a $250 deductible, 20% co-pay.

Sen. Grassley: [to Con. 1] Why dont you ask the people at the Farm Service Administration because we have the same plan federal employees have?

Con. 2: Right.

Con. 1: How come I cant have the same thing you have?

Sen. Grassley: You can! Go work for the federal government!
