@jradetzky look up pyroclastic surges. The people are buried in mud and ash.These are casts made from the holes left by the dead people. Basically, its the full mold of the persons body before they decomposed.

@jradetzky They were buried beneath volcanic ash. When their bodies decayed, stone had formed around the shapes of the bodies. Excavators filled these body-shaped cavities with plaster to reproduce the bodies as they were when they died. There are women holding children, a child with its arms around a dog... Heartbreaking.
