This video tells the story of Professor. Hasanu Simon, a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Forestry Gadjah Mada University. He is one enterprising academic who voiced the idea of 'social forestry'. To him the forest management without involving the community is a futile effort. Ecological functions of forests will only be achieved if the people around the forest prosperous and directly feel the benefits of forests. Prof. Simon idea on Optimal Management of Teak Forests/Pengelolaan Hutan Jati Optimal (PHJO) has been applied in several areas of teak forests in Java. Farmers know this idea as the Regime Management/Manajemen Rezim (MR) or system 'plong-plongan'. MR is a division of space in the forest that allows farmers to grow crops in forest areas.
