  • A declicious menus of sopranos, coloraturafan -thank you, thank you!My opinion - although the recording quality is not as good as some of the others - Bubbles rules! Her clean runs sparkling tone make this a jewel. Biggest surprises: Swenson, who knew? And Frittoli and Mosuc sound gorgeous. Totally reliable - La Stupenda - this is what we expect from her. And for Miss Devia - is nothing short of miraculous to sing like that, passing 6 decades.

  • I know the recording quality with Sills is not as good as the others, but this is her role debut. For that reason, I thought I would upload it. What a treat it is to hear this singer in her first staged Stuarda. BTW, can anyone name the other singers with whom I uploaded their role debuts there are a quite a few in this group of 14?

  • Sills is thrilling, but her voice is just too light. Sutherland is unbelievable; her technique is breath-taking. Who says that the lady can't be dramatic?

  • Sutherland is singing here like her hair is on fire.. I love it when she opens those amazing vocal floodgates. The vocal heft and regal temperament really set Dame Joan apart - even those Sills is no slouch here.

  • @raigekimaru - I would give anything to hear either Sills or Sutherland sing this role at the MET on Opening Night this Fall . . . instead the MET has chosen to insult its loyal audience by throwing the Russian woman adored by her PR company ...

  • Both Sills and Sutherland equally. They both made such great Maria Stuardas and Anna Bolenas. Sutherland didn't sing Queen Elisabeth in Roberto Deveraux & I doubt she could do it. The role is difficult with dazzling coloratura, dramatic outbursts and notes in the lower registers. Sills sang the Queen and had that advantage over Sutherland. Sills sacrificed her voice in the process since she retired at 50 in 1980. Sutherland preserved her voice and sang past 50 thru the rest of the 80's.

  • @rawdonqueen

if by dramatic you mean horrible technique for the sake of "expression", shreaking high notes and banging into low notes (these things are what most people consider "dramatic" singing) than Sutherland would certain not fit the bill. however, under the ACTUAL definition of dramatic, no other non Wagnerian soprano comes close.

  • @coloraturafan Well, the Sutherland excerpt is from her debut, right?

  • Sutherland...by a mile. I love Sills, but her over-ornamentation destroys the melodic line. And Joan's last note blows everyone away.

  • No contest: Sutherland! I liked Sills' version too, but her voice doesn't have the heft required for the role. And Sutherland's final note leaves everyone else in the dust. She's incomparable.

  • sills sills sills all the way and for anyone familair with her recofidn of stuarda and who head and saw her sturdas at city opera, there can be no doubt that she owned this role, and devereux and had joint custody of anna bolena with callas.

as sutherland and sills use different vesions of this aria, you can't compare, sills is higher and adds incredbile runs and roulades no other singer attempts.

  • Sutherland is definately the best, no question about it. However, she seems to have some trouble here. She seems a bit off beat on the coloratura?

  • I like Beverly Sills version the best.
