@somethingfishy6 yes a control issue. and how do you think it starts ? do women just one day wake up and say ohh yeaa today i wanna control my body to death .... no. its a long processs its takes time for someone to go from dieting and excersicing to extreme diets and to not eating at allll. everywhere we go, even in our own homes on tv! we see it everywhere. the media is also the one that has the control issue and wants to control their customer's wants and needs. to a horrible extent.
totally agree with firequeen76 (if your talking to the Rohyprogesterex person) it's not that women are stupid, or anorexics lack self disipline and NEED to buy the magazine (clearly you have no idea about the disease because anorexics have a frightning level of self disipline), it's simply the fact that we see the images and hear the comments from the "responsible" men and decided that THAT image is beauty, and that if we are anything less we are worthless,we shouldn't belive it, but we do
the media effects women and men girls are easily effected by fashion n guys are effected by porn<<<=) i would no i look up porn every day of the week if not im distracted by something else =) like tv guys are effected by tv i watch tv =) and then your wives call you lazy.. and then your laying on d couch with ya pot belly and eating a bag of chips.. i would know.. i like chips =) and boobs..guys are effected by girls like walking down the street and your wife catches you stare... im only 15 =)..
- "The media sends tons of messages to men about what being a "real" man is,"
No, it doesn't. It projects a number of ideals - ranging from loving old grandfather to edgy businessman with shaved head and predatory eyes - in order to sell the product to men who identify with that specific ideal. As far as I know, no man has ever taken these "messages" like a woman would and, for example, tried to speed up the aging process in order to adapt to the "Werther's Original"-image of a real man.
So if a MAN puts on some background music and smoothly suggests a WOMAN should jump off a cliff, because it would improve her looks, it's the man's fault WHEN she does it? Right?
Wow. That is all kinds of sexist. You do realize that, first off, it's usually men who direct these commercials and take these pictures, right?
Also, perhaps the media wouldn't negatively affect our self-esteem as much if men weren't looking at the models and talking about how hot they are.
Finally, let's not pretend like men can't be negatively affected by the media. They can. The media sends tons of messages to men about what being a "real" man is, and to ignore that is also being sexist.

wow i just saw a skinny model- i think i caught anorexia!
I wish people would stop blaming the media for everything. Eating disorders come from more than just a desire to be thin. It's a control issue

I am a sexist. So yes, it is.
