@kruxtrux4157 use can use a fishing rod preferably a bait cast med heavy action with at least 20 lb line use a treble and the best time to catch gar is when it rains a lot and it get flooded gar love to come out and be in the flooded areas where there's grass. for bait ive seen people use dead birds make sure there bloody or use other fish but smash them a little so they bleed.

@kruxtrux4157 me and my friend caught an alligator gar 4 feet and 6 inches long. we used a fishing rod and spinning reel. we caught it at a resaca at UTB and then we ate it. very very hard to skin if your knife is not sharp enough.

Sib=nce I can't speak from personal experience, I'll only suggest you Google "How to catch alligator gar" and you'll find several methods. The day I filmed this, I large one thrust his head out of the water - it was the head of a very large gar!! That's what I was trying to capture on video but he didn't do it again.

I saw a kid place a cicada on a hook once and he caught a bass in seconds. Stink (blood) bait works great with catfish. Alligator gar? Never caught one but if there's a will there'a a way - or special set up needed on that one.
