As part of a nationwide protest, hundreds of Chicagoans marched through the cold and very snowy streets of Chicago on January 10, 2009 in protest of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Signed into law by President Clinton in 1996, DOMA prohibits federal recognition of same-sex relationships and allows states not to honor same-sex marriages performed in other states. President-elect Barack Obama has vowed to repeal DOMA.
