The much honored Grammy and Oscar winning composer, arranger, conductor Henry Mancini wrote this beautiful theme for the 1962 motion picture "Hatari" starring John Wayne.

  • I only wish they could release the actual music cues from the films Hatari!, Pink Panther, Charade, Breakfast at Tiffany's, et cetera, and not just the studio rerecordings. I tend to find the "Music from" albums slightly watered down from Mancini's soundtrack counterparts. (Here for instance, the drums are not as pronounced as they were during Hatari's title credits). I guess RCA was worried about its 1962 audience.

  • Excellent observation and I agree.

  • @d8t170 Just for Tonight,Your Father's Feathers, Night Side, The Soft Touch, Baby Elephant Walk are some.

  • Every time I hear this theme, the images come whirling back; of a beautiful cheetah named Sonya and her wonderful purr, strolling into the bath area to lick soap bubbles off the actress's leg :o) Quite enthralling to an 11year old lad in '62.

  • Would someone please give the titles of the other instrumental music in the film Hatari? Thank you.

  • The original RC A contract is making release of original tracks albums difficult. In later life Mancini regretted the RCA deal.

  • Another Mancini great!! Need I say more?

  • I'll never forget the night I went to see this...I was 12 or 13 years old at the time when it first came out. If you ever get the chance to see it on the big screen go for it.

  • Mancini was a master in his day and just about everything he touched turned to gold.

I remember when the film first came out, my dad went out a bought the soundtrack album, and we played the grooves off of it. my folks were big H. Mancini fans. I think this theme track was my favorite of all and i believe it does indeed capture something primal and beautifully sinister about Mother Africa

Gorgeous piece ! thanks for that, dude

  • OMG! I fell SO nostalgic! I was 12 at the time

  • has anyone heard the Michael Hedges cover of this theme? Gorgeous... It really is a beautiful piece in general.

  • @DrumSet701 Really? I'm glad you liked this one. Have you heard the theme to "The Tamarind Seed"? Beautiful and timely.
