Natalie Dessay performs ''Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen!'', the first movement from Bach's sublime Cantata, BWV 51. Emmanuelle Haïm conducts Le Concert d'Astrée. Trumpet soloist: Neil Brough.

(Note: The sung notes are notated in the soprano clef, so the actual notes are a third lower in the treble clef!)

  • @KrivitskyM I know, it makes everything sort of strange...I have synesthesia so going from C to B major is a big change for me...turns everything from white to brown... :P

  • @betando You're very welcome! :)

  • @8BigEd8 You really think so? I agree it does seem a little fast perhaps compared to most other performances (no idea what the marking actually is) but the fluidity and baroque interpretation of the performers (esp. that gorgeous trumpet) allow it to sit surprisingly well with me, they just make it seem natural. So I feel like it's fast but there's nothing awkward or destructive about the speed at all, in fact I rather like it!

  • * because

  • @SsteinwayS It disorients me very much, becuase I have an «absolute pitch» (see wikipedia for details, if necessary). I have got to say to myself «Yes, it is C, although it sounds like B».

  • @SsteinwayS - Thank you, it does! I actually performed with a Baroque recorder orchestra that used this tuning after posting that comment and had an "aha!" moment-- definitely clears things up! :)

  • @barliman2001 Good luck! :) Beautiful cantata, and ideal for the holiday season. :)

  • @SsteinwayS Very awsome, that trumpet performance! And a bit daunting - I'm due to play that selfsame solo tomorrow morning...

  • @barliman2001 I found it! The wonderful trumpet soloist is Neil Brough!

  • @betando It's performed in the key of C, but because they're using Baroque instruments, they're tuned a semitone lower, in the spirit of "period performance". :) Does that help?
