Learn how to create a cute basic ponytail with this hair tutorial. Expert: Jacqueline Bush

Video transcript:

My name is Jacqueline Bush and I'm an editorial in celebrity hairstyles. My clientele has included Faith Hill, Mark Ruffalo, Terrence Howard, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jane Krakowski. I want to be able to show you that hair isn't as intimidating or as hard as you think it is and I want you be able to have fun with it and do what your vision is with your hair.

I'm going to show you how to do a basic ponytail. What I'm going to use, you can use different tools, you can use your fingers, you can use a brush, you can even use a comb but I'm going to just use my fingers because I like her natural texture and I think that on her particular face is going to look the best. So all I'm going to do, take all the hair back, I'm going to just eye it in the mirror. Monica looks good with height. If you look better with height, give yourself a little height, if you look bad with height, you can make your ponytail lower. I'm just going to gather that all together. As you can see I left this bang section out. This also makes a difference in how cute the ponytail's looking. I'm going to gather that all together and then what I'm going to do I'm going to use something called a bungee cord. A bungee cord is exactly what it sounds like, an elastic with two hooks on each end. So the reason I use a bungee cord instead of a regular rubber band is because a bungee cord offers more control in what you want the hair to do. If I were to use a regular rubber band, the minute I would put it in it would fall, it would leave more weight here and it would also slip instead of being up high where I want it, it would start going lower. Once I decide where I want, grip that hair, then I'm going to take one hook and on one side I'm going to hook the hair, just really on top right now, and still holding the hair, wrapping that elastic around. I'm going to wrap it around one more time, do it twice, it needs to be pretty tight and you're going to take that other hook and you're just going to hook it in. And as you can see that hook is crossed and it is crossed above this part of the elastic. If this hook were to be down here, it would just slide right out.

So now that I have the ponytail in, we're going to take a section of her hair from underneath, we're going to tease it a little, put a little spray. I'm going to give her a little bit of shine, using Rene Furterer Shine Styling Wax, it's a nice product, it's not too heavy on the hair. Right now what I'm doing is just separating out a little so it looks a little more natural, smoothing it out. Going to wrap that around once, wrap it around again, because her hair is so long, I'm actually going to wrap it around a third time. It's good to wrap at least twice if you can get it in there, then I'm going to take a pin and I'm just going to secure that hair piece in there. Might need one more if it's not staying, so I'll take a little u pin and I'm just going to secure that going in, connecting to the hair, secure that in there. Smoothing out her hair, perhaps you want a little more volume, notice how I took the underneath section like I've showed you before, teasing from the underneath and you smooth on top. And that it how you do a ponytail.

  • Pull all your hair back with your hands, tie it all up with a hair tie. And that's how you do a ponytail :) This version looks nicer though.
