Water landing of the shuttle craft seem overlooked, entirely. Skimming and resting at a floating position is what they were designed for in the air, in outer space, and maybe even on land, eventually.

@silicon212 Well that's a stupid Question, the Buran was only flown twice (not counting Gliding tests) for two very simple reasons:
1: Mikhail Gorbachev was never a strong supporter of the Programme, & only ever gave Offcial congratulations to the Development Team upon the test flights, but not anything more
(not the only time a Soviet Aerospace Project had questionable Support from above, same thing for the US / Britain / France etc).
2: Post-1992 Funding Void (which halted most projects).

Ironically, this is one of the few cases of the Americans stealing an idea from the RUSSIANS! The Soviet space plane was the direct inspiration for the HL-20 lifting body (which was never flight tested). They freely discuss how they attempted to reverse-engineer the design from Australian spy pics of the soviet space plane.

@TSR1989B And where exactly did that leave the CCCP?
The NASA shuttle was capable of flying automatically from start to finish as well. It was never flown that way.
If Buran was so much better, why did it only make one flight for two orbits?

The music really made this go into history

@kirbyroxy Part 2/2...
F.Y.I: The Soviets DID get their Shuttle Working actually (argueably better than you lot did yourselves), the Buran was the only shuttle that could be Launched / Piloted & Landed entirely Automatically (something NASA's Shuttle's have Never been able to do at all!).
Additionally: Her (Buran's) "Energia-1" Launch system was (except it's fuel of course) 100% Re-usable, yet Another thing that NASA have NEVER Matched ; )
Too Bad the US was outdone by the CCCP in Tech eh?

@kirbyroxy Ah, yet another Yankee who beleives that the Soviets Copied the TU-160 Blackjack from the Rockwell B-1A, just because they look alike.
Well in reality just like the old Myth that the "TU-144 Charger" was a copy of our "BAC Concorde"... it's all Balls!
Do keep in mind that in Aerospace "Convergent Evolution" is actually very common, just like in the Natural World.

"Ugly as hell" ?? the user below has obviously never seen the TU-160 then ; )
(still one of the most Beautiful Aircraft ever to Fly).
Thanks for posting this Video, i was aware of Buran & her Energia Launch System but i hadn't seen this before now.

Soviet planes are ugly as hell, but, they get up-there and do their stuff and that's what really counts.
