press "ctrl" and right click on the unit you want to attack. Try that and tell me if it worked

ok try ctrl+ left click, or alt+left or right click. I think in the HUD there is an option also to change to melee. Just click on the archers and examine the HUD.
Im sorry I dont remember exactly, I havent played this game in years :/
