My son and I created the classic hockey puck hovercraft. The thing is powered by a Hoover vacuum motor that we bought from Goodwill. I fixed it to a paint can using zip ties and caulk, then attached the can to the platform in the same way. The motor provides a huge amount of power for the hovercraft... way more than it needs. In fact, the thing is very loud and the vents at the bottom of the skirt make a sound like a trumpet against the smooth floor. It was seriously fun to make and the whole thing cost about $60.
