World War II produced some of the most exotic and fearsome prop-driven planes ever to soar across enemy skies. The German Luftwaffe entered the war in excellent shape, with superb fighters and a large number of medium bombers. In fact, the Germans thought they could defeat Great Britain by relying on air power, but the British sent up two excellent fighters, the Spitfire and the Hurricane, to meet the Germans. Flying over home grounds, often against slow and unwieldy Stukas and medium bombers, the British managed to win the battle of Britain and take the war to German skies. Eventually, superior Allied production managed to sweep the skies clear of German planes and bring the war to a close. But top-level German engineering continued to the end, producing jet and rocket fighting planes, as well as a host of other unusual flying machines. Even with superb engineering, the major German aviation weakness was failure to develop an effective long-range bomber like the American B-17. Music includes the German national anthem "Deutschland Uber Alles," followed by "Aces High" from the movie Battle of Britain, and Marlene Dietrich singing the old World War standby "Lili Marlene."
