Episode: Malice for Quake
Level: The Underwater Base
Secrets: Two (I couldn't figure out how to get to them though)
Difficulty: Hard

Oh Malice, we were doing so well. What happened?! Why have you bestowed another level of crappity-crap-crap-crap upon me again? Granted, The Incinerator Plant and The Foundry weren't the best of levels but at least it was a return to form from that Nuclear Plant shit stain. Oh well, as is tradition with me, it's time to list my gripes in some overly long paragraphs once again.

First of all; bland, monotonous design. Yeah, I know a lot of the other levels had their fair share of grey and an overly dull colour scheme but this place takes it to another level. Coupled with the fact that there's not many enemies and you're trawling your way through ANOTHER lifeless industrial environment, it all leaves a very bitter taste in my mouth. However, I will note one of the few positives in this level and that would be the Mini-Sub. Alright, so I don't use it for very long but it's a welcome break from the 'walk down corridor, shoot, move forward, repeat' formula. Them Frogmen never stood a chance against the might of the mighty torpedoes!

Second, and this is crucial. After destroying the Banshee Mech, the floor inside the room opens up revealing a large drop down to a pool of water below. You'd think all I have to do was to jump down and land in the pool of water at the bottom - simple. What's the problem? Every time (and I mean EVERY TIME) I performed the jump, I would ALWAYS die. Always! It's because you land on a small set of stairs before you hit the pool of water. Hitting them first just gibs you instantly. It's another one of those poor design flaws that should have been playtested better. I grew bored of trying to find a 'conventional' way to reach the bottom without dying. Thus, I had to activate God Mode in order to survive the drop and continue forward.

Is there a better way of doing it? Possibly, but I couldn't bloody see it no matter how many different ways I jumped down. I tried many different combinations of jumps from various different angles but all of them ended with the same result. Gibs galore!

Oh yeah, and I missed the Secrets. Since they're both located underneath the set of stairs that do their best to squash me, I passed on them. Again, the main reason was that I couldn't figure out how to reach them without cheating plus the fact that the stairs were CONSTANTLY trying to decapitate me!

Fuck this level. Not as bad as Nuclear Plant but it runs it pretty damn close!

  • I take it the last boss is your employer?

  • @burningofsodom1 Quite right. Although it's pretty obvious right from the very beginning that he's the 'big bad' in all of this.

  • I guess the team didn't really do much tests on all of their levels, a shame really, I was beginning to like this Mod.

  • Nearly the end of the game-4 levels left )

  • Things have not been the same since those three-legged foes grew a torso and a head.
