Being a coastal city allows visitors to Sunderland to benefit from all that the seaside has to offer by way of water based sports at the marina with over 200 moorings and wide public walkways.

Adventure Sunderland, the new Water Sports Centre overlooking Roker beach, offering water-sports activities such as sailing, canoeing and kayaking, and a very active yacht club.

Divers have an excellent dive shop at the Diving Academy on the lower promenade.


Roker is the venue of the annual International Air Show run by the City Council, the biggest free event of its kind in Europe watched by over one million people.

This last 2 years the event won the gold award from Northeast Tourism for being judged the Best Tourism Experience in the North East.

This year the skies were clear on Saturday, with a lot of cloud on Sunday, but the show went on as planned.

The beaches are wide with clean yellow sand, stretching from Roker beach, Seaburn beach to Whitburn beach. Off Seaburn beach is a hotel, restaurant,leasure centre and funfare.

North of Whitburn Village is a windmill and Souter Point lighthouse bordering on South Tyneside.
