It wasnt as bad as some critics wanted to lambast it. To the films merits, it was well shot and the cinematography was exquisite. But the obsessive attention to detail dragged the whole film. Many scenes were unnecessarily long without any point.

....Add reports of animal cruelty, early bad press, it was a disaster waiting to happen. The director would have been forgiven if only he delivered the masterpiece he promised. But he didnt. So bad reviews, poor ticket sales, put the studio bankrupt....

It was the most expensive film at the time. Went 3x over budget, and took almost 2 years to produce. Fresh from winning Oscars, the director let his Ego run unchecked. He was given full control of production. His obsession with detail drag the films production schedule. He would waste 1.3 million dollars tearing down entire sets if it didnt look right. He reportedly filmed each scene at an average of 50 takes. He even told studio execs to fuck off whenever he was being checked...

Apparently, the 2012 re-release of the movie has received critical acclaim. I guess Cimino had to wait 32 years before his film would be accepted as a masterpiece.

Germany lost the war because it tried to fight a war on two sides, which was never going to work. Without the Russians we would be speaking German, although the Americans helped finish the war quicker...
