Richard Davis from the Berklee College of Music presents at the New Mexico Filmmakers Conference in March 28, 2008. Sponsored by the New Mexico Music Commission. Composer for ROBIN HOOD, PRINCE OF THIEVES, THE LAST BOY SCOUT, and ABC's THE FALL GUY, Richard
Davis will speak on the nuts and bolts of composing music for film and television. Discussion will include the
basic process and timelines, midi mock-ups, temp tracks, and the need for the composer to be not just a
musician, but a filmmaker as well. For producers, directors, and composers.

  • Thanks for posting this, really interesting stuff

  • Thanks for watching! Check out our other videos such as our Grammy series.

  • ahh, i guess it's Treasure Planet(2002)?

  • Yes, Treasure Planet.

  • dbocaz....THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing this! What an inspiring bunch of information! Yes, it would have been nice to be able to see the film clips, but it's a priviledge enough just to be able to watch this as though we were in the class room. Thanks ! ! ! !

  • You're very welcome. Next time I'll work on getting copies of what is being used by the instructor and make sure they have permission before hand as well. Doing a film of a film never works :)

  • It was amazing to hear the difference between the mock up and the rendition put forth by a live orchestra. There is no way you can surpass the dynamics, nuances, and emotional output of a collection of live musicians putting their heart into a performance.

  • to be a good music composer are you suppose to play piano as your main instrument? if no are there examples of film scorers that barely play piano?

  • You should have added the videos, to see what's going on. It would have been interesting. But, good video, overall.

  • One word! Amazing, couldn't ask for better wisdom about scores!

  • Soo funny, this guy filming this audience who doesn't has a small idea that they will be watched by 20000 youtube viewers (:

  • wow the mockup was very good, not so much worse at all, remmeber the cost

  • I'm amazed by the similarity of the mock-up and the live orchestra....

  • @enigmism4life probably East West Quantum Leap. Symphobia 2 is also a good software.

  • Thanks!

I know that I use Proppelerhead's Reason. And now I use their Reason+Record bundle. I used to use Pro Tools exclusively with Reason, but what I use now is so much more intuitive for a musician with experience. They use what is called a ReFill and its a different way of approaching synth that sounds much better. I was able to use the mock ups from that in a score for an independent film with a few live instruments.

  • I love you guys for posting lessons like this. Thanks!
