This video features a BBC interview with planetary scientist and theologian Br. Guy Consolmagno. Consolmagno obtained his MSc and Ph.D from MIT and U. of Arizona respectively, and had spent several years conducting post-doc research and professorship at both MIT and Harvard College Observatory before joining the Jesuit order as a monk in 1989. He now conducts extensive research with the Vatican Observatory, and was formerly until 2007 the Chair for both the Division for Planetary Sciences and the American Astronomical Society.
The featured stain-glass window is a centerpiece of three featured in Linsley-Chittenden Hall at Yale University. The shown centerpiece is of three windows, collectively titled 'Education' by Louis Comfort Tiffany of Tiffany Studios. To the left it depicts science, personified by the words Devotion, Labor, Truth, Research and Intuition, while to the right it depicts Religion, personified by the words Purity, Faith, Hope, Reverence and Inspiration, together side by side in harmony under the central Holy personification of Light, Love, and Life. Not shown is the window to the left, which personifies Art, attended by Form, Color and Imagination, while the far right window personifies Music with the words Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, Verse, and Voice. Two angels bridge the three stain-glass windows together into one collective whole.
I found both the artwork and the represented ideas behind them beautiful beyond words, and it wonderfully illustrates both the ideals presented by Guy Consolmagno, and my own.
