The project that the team I was on ended up finishing used two sets of code in the end that were borrowed from a couple places. One used a webcam to detect light through some camera film, and the other translated that detected information into the mouse input. It seems like that kind of project is the basis for how project natal and others are being developed. The advancement of object recognition is the biggest hurdle that faces new input devices right now. Every object has parameters by which we use to identify them, and once we can code those parameters we will need to program when to identify them.
However, this project is just at the level of identifying gestures.
