Uncle Eddie's Guide to Art Appreciation : Dramatic Reading 2

Uncle Eddie's Guide to Art Appreciation is a 50 minute monologue in which an angry Saskatchewan farmer, despite himself, takes up the defense of art. The clips here are from a dramatic script reading recorded live at Cafe Esperanza café during the 2005 Montréal Infringement Festival. It was my first attempt to try and reconcile my peasant roots with the artist and urbanite that I have become.

In the next part of the monologue Uncle Eddie's state of mind changes, from drunk to sober, and so do his attitudes. In this next clip Uncle Eddie is in his garden, then in his kitchen giving cooking tips and telling stories. He is off the bottle after an incident which put him in the hospital. Uncle Eddie is now much more likable. The screen now presents positive statements about art from the comment book. Eddie has been telling us about a day in the pub when he and his buddies are going on about an art controversy in the news. One of his friends, Martin, has a son who is a good artist. They are all teasing martin who gets angry, leaves the pub and comes back and destroys his kid's drawings in front of them. Uncle Eddie then tells how he sees similarities between artists and farmers.
