This is the kitesurfing footage of the historical run that brought kitesurfer Rob Douglas to an average speed of49.84 knots over a 500 meter course. The wind was blowing 30 to 25 knots average and gusting to 40 knots. Luderitz's "second lagoon" was set up with a flooding high tide that created very flat water conditions. Sebastian Cattelain can be seen making the second fastest run of the planet in the background. He missed beating Rob by less than a half of a second. Do a google search on how apparent wind works; its sort of like leveraging against the wind speed and pressure of the board to extract mnore force, as the two combine.

get a slippery watermelon seed, squeeze it hard between your two fingers, look how fast it went. Now think about it it, your fingers werent going very fast, just applying a lot of force on each side.

the kite is applying huge force on one side, and the stiff edge of the board is locking that force up against the water so you can go way faster than the wind - just like the watermelon seed went way faster than your fingers were moving.

Don't be sorry, play a cop, 61kn was not a record on the 500 meters, it is a speed set ( not a record" yet") by a trimaran on Hydrofoil. And in rufwater 2 !!
