ccustommusic - I'm not sure if you're not into Cat or not into the style from the era he's from. When Maynard first started out, he was doing Cat-type stuff. In his later years, after Ellington, Cat could quote Maynard and Chase licks note for note and then an octave above that. Unfortunately, there aren't very many documented videos or recordings of him in the late 70s and 80s.

I really have tried, but I just can not get into Cat Anderson. Too squeaky, lame improvisation etc. I know it is tough because I just compare everyone to Maynard, but still. I am just not a fan.

is he using a COnn trumpet?

I am a lead player, and i am addicted to highnotes :) gotta love the donna lee quote at 2:15

Hi sorry I didn't respond right away, I haven't watched this video in a long time and haven't logged on, Yeah I play trumpet and I think its the best part about a big band haha, I really like high notes and I can play pretty high like double c with a full tone but I don't focus on high notes anymore, I used to and started lacking in everything else, what was it like being a student of the amazing cat anderson, what did you learn and what year did you start.

When i am listening to this, I feel like I am high!
ROFLOL!! Yes, I did post this before, then I accidentally eliminated ALL of the cookies on my computer and lost everything, so I'm having to repost everything... everywhere.
Yes, Cat was my teacher for 8 years, which makes me 50-something (so I'm ancient!). I appreciate your comments on the video, though. Are you a trumpet player?
