  • Kitsch yes, but "toe-curlingly"? I'm a big Esther fan and haven't listened to it for years but when you're making albums as deviantly brilliant as "Up to Date" or "2 in 3", a hit single pays for a sufficiently humongeous orchestra. It (Cinderella) is knowingly ridiculous but even I've seen respected rock critics (Paul Morley) wax lyrical about it. Uncurl those toes!

    .

  • hard to believe this gem came from those responsible for the toe-curlingly kitch 'cinderella rockerfella'!

  • ...well she didn't like but the music but surely loved the lifestyle...

  • Its more complicated then early or late. From the start there is this "split personality". Esther recorded four album before going to Europe, Two with Abi & two solo ones. You can call it "light" and "heavy". There are people who don't like the "heavy" part of Esther and of course those who don't like the "light" part. I think the best way is to judge the individual songs and not any specific period. There are many songs that Esther did with Abi that are worth listening to.

  • I think arguing over Esther's early music versus her later music, is like trying to say Esther is better or worse than Ofra- Both styles are unique, and appeal to different people. This doesn't make one better than the other.

I personally like both, her early music was very fun and lively, with a great deal of variety, while her later music was more mature and refined.

  • The show is (or was?) called Hits to GO GO and she did "she is leaving home" (terrible recording and bad lipsync as usual) and Hachamor with abi - all three from the Up To Date LP - 1969. Esther is best LIVE and lipsync is NOT for her, mainly because she forgets to breath and does not have the faintest idea how she did breath on the recording :) But seriously, because she is a true artist that never sings a song in the same way again. :)
