@IBTS13 Hello, I live in South West Florida, very far south. I live on a part of the River that is both salt water from the Gulf of Mexico and fresh water from the river. This mixture or meeting of the two bodies of water is called brackish. All manner of marine life live here including blue crab, dolphin, tarpon, snook, turtles and yup a family of manatee have lived here for years and years. We have an infant this year that is the size of a human thigh. I don't know about all Manatees only FL.

Manatees are closely related to elephants.

The cold weather in Florida this winter has been hard on the manatees.
Wildlife biologists say close to 200 of the endangered creatures have perished because of the extreme cold. That's an unprecedented number.
By mid-February, 301 manatees had turned up dead from various causes. The average number of deaths for this time of year over the previous five years is just 10.
Manatees cannot tolerate water temperatures below 65 degrees.
Thanks Everyone for the kind words... it gives me encouragement to finish this film.

If he is really that young.. isn't he too young to be away from his mom?

I suspect this baby manatees momma died - because manatees do not abandon their young.

Actually this was filmed up the Weeki Wachee river - not in the Everglades. " Lucky " BTW is doing well as of last week when I visited him again. Getting big - will see he gets out of the river next spring. Even though his momma must of died - manatees have good instincts. This baby manatee is now about 9 -10 months old. 3 or 4 when this video was shot. New footage of Lucky and his story will be part of the Gentle Giants film have been working on. Lucky says thanks everyone for the kind words!
