Hosted by the Nassau Community College Center for Catholic Studies, the following is a recording of the conference "Catholicism and Economics," held April 4th, 2009. This event was hosted by Dr. Joseph Varacalli, head of the Center for Catholic Studies, and included the participation of Mr. Thomas Storck (Distributist position), Dr. Charles Clark (Socialist position), and Mr. Michael Novak (Capitalist position).

The event began following an homage to the life-long contributions of three recently deceased pro-life advocates. Each speaker was given an opportunity to expose their respective economic positions, followed by an exchange, and final summary.

Immediately following the debate, Dr. Stephen Krason professor at Franciscan Steubenville, addressed the audience from the Solidarist economic thought of Fr. Heinrich Pesch.

  • They should have dropped the superstitious bullshit...

  • @GenghisKhan44

Well, coming from non-indoctrinated perspective, that makes absolutely no sense. Religious nonsense doesn't belong in intellectual discussion. End of story.

  • @Aliothemage This is only one side of this debate. There are also the Capitalist and Distributist sides to consider.

Besides, I believe he was implying that Because God is three entities in one person, it is likely if not mandatory that these three entities communicate to produce the world we live in. Therefore, if the Father, Son and Holy Spirit necessarily communicates between each other, perhaps God intended that man should need to communicate with his fellow man similarly?

  • @Clinias Economics is about meeting human needs and maximizing human potential, creativity and dignity. There are fundamental moral reasons we have an economy. Its not about greed, avarice, money, power and profit. Our moral compass in life is not a balance sheet.

And economics certainly is involved in the provision of health care, which is a right and not a privilege, or just another commodity.

  • If man is created in the image of God. Does his nature not reflect the nature of man?

  • uh oh he seems to be sympathetic to Keynesian economics

  • Wow, the opening of this video made me turn it off. Humans are necessarily social because God is a Trinity? lol, wow what an absurd statement.

  • Economics is not about solving inequality and poverty. They will always be there. And no economics is not about national health care as well. Even though he sounds like a "catholic", he sounds like a Marxist with all his caveats to political correctness.
