Sept 12, 2010: Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue talks about El Grito as a chance to celebrate Mexican heritage and bring families together for a day of fun and entertainment. He says it's one example of the many cultural contributions of the city's different communities.
"El Grito" means "the cry". It refers to the cry for freedom made by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla at the beginning of the Mexican war of independence from Spain in 1810.
While at El Grito, Mayor Donohue, County Supervisor Fernando Armenta and City Council Member Gloria De La Rosa welcomed David Figueroa, the Mexican Consul General in San Jose, California.
