Organizations outside the United States have begun advertising stem cell-based cures for disease, and in increasing numbers Americans are traveling to receive these cures. Unfortunately, at this time none of those advertised therapies have been shown to be either safe or effective.

Researchers such as Jeanne Loring, director of the Center for Regenerative Medicine at the Scripps Research Institute, worry that people could be harmed through the untested procedures that they receive when they embark on stem cell tourism.

Two resources for learning more about stem cell tourism are Lorings web site, where she discusses the dangers of stem cell tourism (www.stemcellcommunity.org) and the International Society for Stem Cell Research patient handbook (www.isscr.org/public).

  • These groups put down foreign doctors and clinics precisely because they have NOTHING to offer themselves. They have fumbled the ball badly and now use smokescreens to hide the fact that we've been left in the dust in this area. Perhaps Jeanne would be so kind as to explain exactly what we've done in the U.S. besides play with mice, test tubes and petri dishes. Our government and researchers should hang their heads in shame, shut up and get to work so we don't HAVE to leave the country!

  • Utter bullcrap, telling dying patients to "be patient" - what they're saying is "you should just die because we don't have anything for you now. There is almost ZERO human research and clinical trials going on in the U.S. So we should wait 10-15 years? I agree, we need to be careful. But I fled my country in order to get the treatment I needed and it SHOULD have been available HERE. If I'm dying, WTF are they protecting me FROM? It's the FDA and the NIH who are playing games with our LIVES!

  • when will these stem cells be applied to human
