Self Immolation in Calgary

I happened to spot a fire from my 13th story window and decided to zoom in and take a video. I was on my way to a meeting, so it wasn't until later, when I got around to viewing it, that I realized it was a person they were extinguishing.

I'm told he didn't want to be deported back to his native Algeria, so he "protested" by setting himself alight in front of a Federal building. He's in pretty serious condition with second degree burns to over 40% of his body and is in hospital here (Feb. 2009), so I guess he's won a reprieve of sorts.

I would say this 40 something man was pretty lucky many good Samaritans happened on the scene and tried to put him out with their coats. It turns out, the Paramedics just happened by the scene while on an unrelated call. They used their fire extinguisher to finally put out the flames.

It happens that another person, with a video camera, was actually down at street level to record the event. You can probably Google for it. You can actually see him enter this video, just about at the end, from the left side and he becomes partially hidden by a pole.

I didn't post this video to show death and destruction, it's here to show the plight of the person who did this to himself. Obviously, he really did not want to return to his country of origin. It's a sad statement and I truly hope he's ok, but I've heard nothing in the news since it happened.

things would have been much worse to be sent back to algeria, a very repressive regime but its ok if they have no oil! assylum should be a right not a fight. still though, people shouldnt self immolate suicide is wrong. better to try sneak through the border in the dead of night into america for a job at taco bells
