Satan and Adam, the Harlem blues duo, in their prime. Mr. Satan (Sterling Magee) is the subject of Adam Gussow's 1998 memoir, MISTER SATAN'S APPRENTICE. The duo opens with an original, "Sunshine in the Shade," then segues into Billy Preston's "Will It Go Round in Circles."

  • mr. gussow, word has it you have a memoir available? how might i go bout checkin in2 that?

  • Yes, it's just been republished by U of MInnesota Press. google "mister satan's apprentice" and buy it at amazon & elsewhere......

  • I have to come to harlem and meet satan man! You guys are great! it's all feel man! you listen to each other and go! Thats pure and real man!

  • He no longer lives in Harlem. He lives at the Boca Ciega facility in Gulfport, FL, in greater St. Petersburg. If you call ahead, I'm sure he'd be happy to have you stop by. If you blow harp, bring a harp.

  • MAD JAM in E! The ebb and flow of the harmonica was inspirational and educational. You are SO LUCKY to have satan. In my shithole of a burgh everybody insists the blues is dead and the harmonica belongs on hee-haw:( You have re-ignited my love of the instrument and put me on new, greater paths, thank you;)

  • Thanks, Jim. The feeling is mutual. I've checked out your videos; you're doing something useful yourself--keeping that anarchic spirit alive. If the harp isn't about that at least some of the time, what the hell is it about?

  • Proof, White folks can have and play the blues. I know this true cuz im white and my whole life has been the blues from my head to my shoes. and i wouldnt trade none of my blues for the rain to wash em away and trade it in for a sunnier day. happy, sad, depressed, or glad. im still alive...

You know that white folks can play the blues because you're white, and you're life has been the blues? ... Dude! Stevie Ray Vaughan is a way easier example :)

  • Nice to see. Had a time getting "Living On The River" on my iPod but with a little help from my niece with a Mac I'm now back in business with my favorite street duo!

  • saw them at the junk yard in orlando (casselberry) in '94. great musicians and good people. we hung out and talked for about an hour, helped load up their minimal amount of gear into a hatchback, and sent them on their way. Got a pack of kool's out of it, never liked menthol but it was a kick.

  • This is the first of your performances I've seen w/Mr. Satan and damn is he amazing. His guitar playing is out there.. in a really sweet way.

  • was camped out at this show. great to see it again.

  • not old do you rock the harp, you are a pretty good dancer as well!

  • There really is something incredibly special about that man.
