Superior You Are Inferior by Rae Spoon

Rae Spoon is a Canadian, female to male transgendered, folk / country / indie rock singer songwriter. Born in Calgary, Alberta. This is his 4th album, also recorded in Calgary.

Superior You Are Inferior is a very heartfelt, well written, folk rock album. Rae even went that extra mile and added some very nice electronic highlights on this album, giving the folksiness of the music a very updated and fresh feeling.

The songs on here deal with a lot of his personal experiences and showcase a lot of typical Canadian imagery. (Grizzles, horses, Calgary tower, The Great lakes, prairies, oil rush, etc) A feeling of loneliness and longing is experienced while listening to it. All the songs are sung in a very heartfelt and evocative way. Rae's voice is very emotive and haunted and you can tell he has a wealth of experience singing honest country / folk songs.

This album does have somewhat of a sad feel to it and sometimes deal with alienation and discrimination, but never really tries to shove any kind of message in your face. It has good use of imagery and is generally a pleasure to listen to.

If you are really looking for an up to date, quintessential, Canadian to the max album, Rae spoon might be for you. The content of the album may be somewhat of a downer, but the music and Raes delivery is usually very uplifting and never heavy handed. Although folk and country are obvious influences, it never weighs the album down or makes it drag. The songs are very pretty, a little on the slow side, but very well done and the electronic touches make it a pleasure to listen to.

It sounds slightly depressing to me. I prefer more upbeat records but, I suppose its everyone's choice. Just want to plug my next review, it should be uploaded tomorrow and the album I'm reviewing is a belter.
