  • This isn't meant to be harsh. You need to hire. If you can't afford that, then you need to re-evaluate your business model. Also, you may not be able to add as many new products. If you want to continue personal notes, then you need to cut out something else. (this is from personal business experience, btw)

  • @outworldarts Done...sorry, I know I responded this way to a bunch of everyone's comments here, I'm sorry I took so long to respond to everyone! Since I made this video almost a year ago, we've changed a lot. We've expanded our products drastically and hired the right help to match it, and we've grown well because of it. I'm very pleased and we'll continue to keep the personal touches like handwritten notes (though less elaborate than we used to last year) as we grow.

  • I think the shipping notice emails are personal enough. But if business is good you might just hire a packing person or something.

  • @tubeofmine Done, we have 3 now :)

  • Hire some teens they would probably learn a lot while working with you.The handwritten note is real important keep on doing them people will come back to your site and buy from you because of the service they receive.Try typing some notes prior to packaging the ink and then just sign it or wax seal.

  • @LASTSIKHLEFT The wax seal was the lowest RIO part of the 'old' notes I did. I don't regret giving those up, even though they were fun (to a point!). We have 3 full time guys in our shop now and things are flowing smooth.

  • @prth8machine I though about that, but we decided that writing a simpler note just on the invoice was better overall. I'm happy with it: )

  • @alan8943 Done!

  • @kvkaha The balance is a tough thing, especially when you're a mom and pop shop that's gone from running a business in the dining room. We're growing and learning every day. I'm happy with the balance we're striking so far though. We now have a shop with 3 guys helping us, but we've still kept that mom and pop feel :)

  • @bobfet1 Done!

  • @TheOriginalStevenH I'm doing notes that are more brief now, but still doing them to this day. It is a personal touch that I just don't want to give up. It's not always practical or possible for me to write them, sometimes it's my wife (also my business partner/boss!) or one of our guys in the shop, but it's important to me that everyone who orders from us knows that we're all humans here helping them out :)

  • I really enjoy the hand written notes at the end of the invoices you send me. I get to see the personal side of the business and introduce me to new inks. I also am really enjoying knowing what the ink is and the uniqueness that makes up the hand written part. Its just something everybody that orders get to experience and I save all my invoices so I may look back at the different colors. In the words of Leo Babauta, " If your going to do anything... Do one thing well." And you do just that!

  • @outworldarts, I agree! This was posted back in Sept. and it's March now, we've since dropped elaborate notes (still doing short ones on the invoices). We have 2 part time helpers and we're looking to expand. We've found a good balance now....it's funny for me to look back and see what I thought was sooo important to do, like the elaborate notes with wax seals.
