UCLA theater prof presents tale of Virgin of Guadalupe

UCLA theater professor Jose Luis Valenzuela directs "La Virgen de Guadalupe: Dios Inantzin," a pageant honoring Mexico's patron saint that has become an annual holiday tradition in Los Angeles. The free play, which features more than 100 actors, dancers, singers, musicians and children, is expected to draw nearly 7,000 viewers over two nights (Dec. 6 and 7) to downtown's Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

The play will also be performed nightly Dec. 13--16 and Dec. 20--22 at the New Los Angeles Theater Company (LATC).

The pageant, performed in Spanish with a synopsis in English, tells the story of Juan Diego's four encounters with the Virgin of Guadalupe in the hills of Tepeyac outside Mexico City in 1531 and his efforts to convince the Spanish Catholic bishop of his visions. Because of its universal message of faith, love and perseverance, the play appeals to diverse people, regardless of race, language or religion.

Having researched liturgical law, such a preformance would be more appropriate in a stadium, or the Disney Music hall down the street. It just relegates, a church (WADR) that already looks like an office building to a preforming arts center.

2 Kings 2:11-12; 1 Mac 2:58 - Elijah was assumed into heaven in fiery chariot. Jesus would not do any less for His Blessed Mother.

Gen. 5:24, Heb. 11:5 - Enoch was bodily assumed into heaven without dying. Would God do any less for Mary the Ark of the New Covenant?

Ezek. 41:15 - Ezekiel describes graven images in the temple consisting of carved likenesses of cherubim. These are similar to the images of the angels and saints in many Catholic churches

1 Chron. 28:18-19 - David gives Solomon the plan for the altar made of refined gold with a golden cherubim images. These images were used in the Jews' most solemn place of worship.
