I heard that the hawk/falcon will at best only tolerate your presance, but I also heard that the falconer and the bird have a close but fragile relationship. What would your opinion be on that?

I agree ;)
It can be different depending on if the bird is manned really well or imprinted but on par I would say it is on par to a cat that doesn't like to be petted.
