Although otters are graceful and agile swimmers, they aren't born that way. The mother has to carefully teach the pups how to swim, dive, go up and down slides to the burrow, and be at home in the water. She dries them off after then swim before they return to the den.
The pups were born on March 19 and photographed on June 2. The three pups are males.
Audrey, the mother, begins by first teaching them how to float. After this she teaches them swimming, how to maneuver above and below water, how to dive and slide and make slides. She also teaches them to dry off before entering the burrow.
The animals are endangered and it is rare to see a mother teaching her young ones.
***The North American River Otter, Lontra canadensis, which is also known as the Northern River Otter or the Common Otter, is a semi-aquatic mammal that lives in North America in and along its waterways and coasts.
Where was this taken? Was this in Columbus Zoo & Aquarium in OH?
