Carrera Virtuoso Medium Road Bike - http://bit.ly/virtuosobike - Needed a relatively low cost, entry level road bike, as my current hybrid is quite heavy and this machine is very light (for the money) and has Shimano ST2200 16 speed gearing with STI shifters.

The lightness is important to me, as I live in a hilly area. Also makes it easy for me to "shoulder" the bike up the stairs to my flat. This bike doesn't come with Shimano SPD pedals. The standard pedals are a bit crap and you would be advised to change them.

The Carrera Virtuoso road bike features a lightweight 7005 compact aluminium frame, blade forks with 1-1/8th steerer, 16 speed Shimano STI shifters with Shimano front and rear mechs, Tektro 510A dual pivot brake calipers and Alloy double wall alloy rims with 700 x 25C road tyres. The brakes are combined into the gear shift arrangement on the handle bars.

This bike has received some good reviews (if you Google around) and seems some even use them for triathlon's! Quite a sensible choice for commuting if you can get used to the drop down bars. Assembled by Halfords, Huddersfield. Thanks for their assistance. Now for the open road, where this bike really flies along! You might get a few snooty looks from cycle club types but on this you can keep up with them!

Cost around £350 (subject to special offers atm). Not bad.

  • Should have read these posts earlier. I have this bike in red and it was great but my back and groin hurt like he'll. Not sure if it's the bike or my set-up. The guys in Halfords weren't too concerned about my set up they just wanted my cash lol.

  • @stethorn1 If i was you get the large it will last you much longer and will get your monies worth. I am short about 5ft 3" and according to specialized i should have got a (48cm frame to a 52cm) but to get my monies worth i go the 53 to 55cm frame. i am on my tip toes but i dont care. the shop i got my bike from cut the seat post to make it go further down.

iam happy with a bigger size but its up to you. its gona be your bike.

  • @CJTAGG1 personally i would not get this bike, for a bit more money i got a specialized allez (better quality, more well known and the set up is much better shimano) by the way i am only 13 and not that tall (5ft 3") and i got according to specialized i got around a 53cm frame. A good shop to look at is Shorter Rochford Cycles. You can by bikes online
