During his preparation for the role of Mr. Plainview, Daniel Day-Lewis learned that early oil prospectors frequently suffered from irritable bowel syndrome. Being the consummate method actor, Day-Lewis would drink a whole bottle of laxative prior to each take. Unfortunately, Day-Lewis's fanatical commitment to his craft had unpleasant consequences, as this outtake from the film demonstrates.
