A deepening low moved across the midwest on 12/31/10, sending tropical air northward. That morning, storms spawned tornadoes across Arkansas and Missouri and continued to hang in there all the way north into central Illinois. I caught up with the line of semi-discrete cells near Bloomington. This group of storms put down an EF-3 tornado about 70 miles SW of BloNo in Lake Petersburg. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=ilx&storyid=61897&a...
Without a lot of instability, the storms tended to "pulse" in the high-shear environment. The cells weakened as they moved through Lincoln and Atlanta, but "Pulsed" again near Bloomington and Tornado warnings were issued for McLean and Livingston counties during the making of this video. A funnel cloud was reported north of my location in Livingston county, but no tornadoes touched down and the storm was a bit of a non-event for the Bloomington area.
As the sun angle dropped later in the afternoon, the contrast started to pick up really nicely and I was able to take a lot of decent shots. When I returned to Chicago, the city was draped in bands of fog coming off of the ice in the harbors of Lake Michigan. (It was in the upper 50s still in Chicago!)
All the photos and video were taken on my iPhone 3GS. I used Radarscope, Camera Genius, and Pano. The photos weren't edited for contrast or color.
